Tale of Two MVP’s
What fascinates me most about sports (Maine sports and otherwise), is watching how two similar athletes with comparable skills, can boost or drop their performance based on what happens in the arena between their ears.

Even more striking is witnessing the “cinderella story” of an athlete or team who seems to take their game and performance above and beyond expectations – by winning the mental game.

While their are many great examples, consider these two recent Most Valuable Players – each competing in arguably the World’s most competitive leagues:

Not only does Steve Nash not resemble some of the other “freak of nature-like” athletes who dominate the NBA, but he more closely resembles your local pizza delivery guy (sorry Steve, we mean that in the nicest way) than the top performer in the National Basketball Association.

Despite being challenged by bigger, quicker, and stronger players – Steve Nash is year in year out among the elite and most respected leaders (2 NBA MVP Awards in 2005 & 2006) because of his ability to play the mental game.

Tom Brady may make headlines today for dating supermodels and his ability to perform under pressure, but it wasn’t always that way. At the University of Michigan Brady was buried on the depth chart behind Brian Griese on a National Championship team.

He eventually hired a sports psychologist to deal with the frustration and lack of opportunity. Chosen in the 6th round of the NFL draft (199th overall) Brady was knocked for his speed and agility scores. Since 2001, Tom Brady has only led the New England Patriots to 3 Super Bowls – twice named Super Bowl and League MVP.

What are you doing to raise your Mental Game to the next level and MAX-imize your performance in sports, or the Game of Life?

There is a reason why the pros are loathe to share their secrets, but more and more people are using hypnosis to tap into their own resource – making the most of their potential and opportunities.

Can you really afford to not develop your Mental Game? If you don’t, you can be guaranteed that one of your competitors here in Maine sports will!

Hypnosis Works! What Can It Do For You?

Hypnosis works – by debugging your brain, and programming it for success – learning the secrets the pros know, but are loathe to share.

Hypnosis programming for peak performance is designed for any athlete competing at any level – who desires a competitive edge.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the now famous hypnosis experiment involving 3 groups of foul shooters. The first practiced in the gym once each day for 20 minutes. The second group also practiced for 20 minutes, but thru visualization in the HypnoGym of the mind. A third group served as a control.

Six weeks later, the first group improved their foul-shooting percentage 28%. The control group showed no significant improvement. But most surprisingly, those practicing mentally improved nearly as much (26%) as the first.

Even more interesting to note, this kind of experiment has been repeated a number of times including most recently at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Researchers there tested the effects of mental training versus physical training, measuring not just improvements in skill-based activities, but even increases in strength and quickness – all with equally impressive results!

and hypnotic techniques
Tiger Woods’ mental coach uses hypnosis with him to block out distractions and sharpen focus on the golf course.

Championship basketball player Michael Jordan and championship golfer Jack Nicklaus both lauded hypnosis and visualization techniques as the key factors for their elite concentration and performance.

Jimmy Connors is said to have used hypnosis techniques to practice his winning strokes prior to the US Open Championship.

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) world-renowned physicist – was known to have his hypnosis sessions every afternoon. His theory of relativity came to him while maintaining trance in one of these sessions.

Mark Knopfler, Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore, Ellen DeGeneres, Ashton Kutcher and Charlize Theron beat their smoking habit through hypnosis.

Jackie Kennedy Onassis used hypnotherapy to relive and let go of tragic events in her life.

Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie turned to a hypnotherapist to get her life back on track after becoming addicted to crystal meth. The singer, real name Stacy Ferguson, decided to seek help after spiraling out of control.

She explains, “I started going a little nuts and hit rock bottom. I called my mom and told her I had been doing crystal meth for a year and I moved back into my old bedroom as a 25-year-old. I had a collection agencies after me – I had spent all my money.”

The singer decided to seek treatment and found hypnotherapy helped her recover from her addiction. She adds, “I had to learn self-love and I learned it through hypnotherapy. It’s not some fruity thing – it’s not like you’re going to a psychic or something. We just talk. Sometimes she puts a box of tissues right in front of me, and I let it all out. She’s amazing.”

Hypno Surgery – A Live Television Event!

STANFORD, Calif. — It was no way for an 11-year-old to live. For a month the boy had endured daily episodes of uncontrollable jerking and foaming at the mouth, and his physicians at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford were concerned that the boy had epilepsy. Before starting the boy on a lifetime of anti-seizure medications, though, they turned to an unconventional diagnostic tool: hypnosis.

And other great minds also used hypnosis to tap into the power of their subconscious minds:

Lord Tennyson Alfred (1809-92) wrote complete poems while hypnotized.

Mozart (1756-91) apparently composed the famous opera Cosi Fan Tutte while hypnotized.

Rachmaninov (1873-1943) reputedly composed one of his concertos following a post-hypnotic suggestion.

Goethe (1749-1832) writer and scientist and, Chopin (1810-1849) pianist and composer both took classes in hypnosis at the University of Strasbourg.

Thomas Edison (1847-1931) inventor.

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) inventor.

Henry Ford (1863-1947) car manufacturer.

All utilized hypnotic techniques to tap into inner resources of creativity, energy, and determination.

What Is Hypnosis?

Let’s make some sense of the many and varied answers given when people ask, “What is Hypnosis?”

“Hypnosis is like electricity; very few people understand what it is, or how it works, but everyone uses – some more efficiently than others.”

So let’s begin with the official answer, as defined by the U.S. Government:

Hypnosis is an altered state of mind identified by the following two characteristics: (1) the bypass of the critical factor, and (2) the establishment of acceptable selective thinking.

What does that mean?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that happens when 1) our concentration becomes so concentrated that critical factor (the part of our conscious mind that compares this to that) takes a break; and 2) with the gateway left open, our subconscious and unconscious minds are then open and receptive to suggestions.

Here is a short list of what Hypnosis IS and IS NOT:

* A naturally occurring state of mind that everyone has already experienced, either by accident or design;
* Hypnosis is NOT supernatural, NOT magic, nor result in zombie-like mind control as portrayed in the movies;
* Hypnosis is NOT sleep (if it was, how could you hear and respond to the suggestions?);
* Using hypnosis is like upgrading the software in your brain;
* Hypnosis IS a state of highly focused concentration that occupies the attention of the conscious mind, opening up access and receptivity with the subconscious and unconscious parts of the mind;

Let me give you an example, have you ever casually heard a song while you were focused on some other activity, but that song seems to stay with you all day, echoing in your head? Why, because at the time you heard the song you were in a focused or light hypnotic state – and that song (hopefully a good one) got past the guardian.

Or, have you ever been so absorbed in an activity (driving a car, watching TV, reading a book) that time flew by and when you looked up, you had driven several miles down the road past your exit? That’s called highway hypnosis. You weren’t asleep (you wouldn’t have been able to navigate and avoid accidents) but you have no recollection of the trip. It happens to all of us several times each day.

While many people routinely experience a trance-like state while they are watching television or sitting at a red light. A person in a trance or deeply focused state is unusually responsive to an idea or image, but this does not mean that a hypnotist can control his or her mind and free will. On the contrary, hypnosis can actually teach people how to master their own states of awareness. By doing so they can affect their own bodily functions and psychological responses.

Even advertisers utilize this science. TV creates programming to entertain AND induce a light trance, then presents you with hypnotic suggestions – that we call commercials. It works amazingly well. How else could you so easily finish this sentence, “Plop, plop, fizz, fizz…”

Or how about “I’m a Chiquita banana…”

Did you know those advertising jingles haven’t run in decades. But the power of the subconscious mind can call upon them at a moments notice when the suggestions have been properly embedded.

So to go back to that government definition, the “bypass of the critical factor” simply means the release of limiting beliefs. For example, the use of hypnosis for anesthesia has been accepted by the American Medical Association since 1958.

It is well established that hypnosis is useful for creating anesthesia. However, if you have the limiting belief that the mind cannot create a powerful anesthesia, you will be unable to do so. However, in hypnosis, this limiting belief can be bypassed, and hypnotic anesthesia can be quickly created.

“The establishment of acceptable selective thinking,” the second part of the definition, refers to the process of guiding someone into hypnosis by using a hypnotic induction. The establishment of selective thinking creates the mental environment or state of mind that enables you to reject limiting beliefs (that you picked up by living in our society), so that you can accept new more empowering ones, and sharpening your mental edge to win the Game of Life.

Why Is Communication with the Unconscious Mind So Important?

Your conscious mind is only able to process approximately 50 bits of information a second, while your unconscious mind processes approximately 11 million bits per second.*

* Source: Zimmerman, M. (1989). “The nervous system in the context of information theory.” In R. F. Schmidt & G. Thews (eds.), Human Physiology, pp. 166-173. Berlin, Germany: Springer-Verlag.

That means your unconscious mind is about 220 THOUSAND TIMES FASTER than your conscious mind. This is like accessing a supercomputer to sharpen the mental edge of your game!

But Hypnosis is not JUST for sports…

Medical institutions also advocate the use of hypnosis.

Clinical hypnotherapy has been widely researched and endorsed by many medical authorities for a wide variety of medical, dental, and psychotherapeutic uses. The consensus in the medical community is that hypnosis shortens treatment time and can provide invaluable relief when other treatments fail. Hypnosis is used and recommended by such prestigious and well-respected institutions as the AMA, ADA, NIH, Kaiser Permanente, and Stanford University Medical Center.

* AMA approved the use of hypnosis in 1958, the British Medical Association in 1955;
* American Dental Association (ADA) for dental phobia, treatment pain, when anesthesia cannot be used;
* American Psychology Association (APA) for help with PTSD, ADD-ADHD, phobias, panic attacks, grief;
* National Institute of Health (NIH) 1995, supports for treatment of chronic pain, side effects of oncology treatment, pediatric and elderly;
* Stanford University Medical Center – David Spiegel, MD, major researcher in medical uses of hypnosis, in cancer treatment to reduce nausea, pain and anxiety being only one;
* Harvard Medical University – reported that hypnosis seems to block the nerve receptors …those that affect pain, anxiety and discomfort;
* Blue Shield of California, Medicare, Kaiser Permanente, hypnosis sometimes covered by insurance;
* University of Washington Harborview Burn Center Center, David Patterson, MD – Hypnosis works miracles in burn care, which requires pulling off bandages and scrubbing the burned skin;
* UCLA School of Neurovisceral Sciences and Women’s Health – Dr. Bruce Naliboff, PhD – hypnosis is very helpful in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS);
* Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Boston, MA – Dr. Elvira Lang, MD has been using hypnosis for 13 years to provide pain-free breast biopsies and to calm patients, cutting treatment time and need for sedation.

Wash Stress Away In Seconds

CaricatureHeadSquareHere’s my thought for the day (thanks to prompt from the Philosopher’s Notes 50-Day Challenge) that I love so much I am going to work this into a hypno session so I can program my mind with this one.

The actual big idea comes from Dale Carnegie’s How To Stop Worrying And Start Living. It is so simple and doable that I can’t believe I haven’t heard this before, somewhere along the way! Here’s the tip:

1) When dealing with worry and anxiety – the second you make a decision you dispel 50% of the stress that you were carrying (that psychological stress is gone);

2) Then when you take action on that decision – you banish another 40%!

Isn’t that so true! Hasn’t that been your experience too?

Yesterday Martina and I were having a lunch discussion about MindboomTV and all the things we need to do. It can be so overwhelming at times I wasn’t sure which one of us would break down first. But the second we made a decision of how we would proceed over this next week – it was like someone flipped the switch and that big black cloud lifted immediately.

I could breath again. And that is what stress is. I used to think stress was something that other people had to deal with. I am a pretty low key personality – not too high, not too low. But my stress comes out in different ways. Impatience and snapping at others. Frustration. But the worse is – it feels like it sucks the fun out of life.

Stress is not worth the price I have (or you) been paying. So I am making a decision, right here and now – to program this little 1-2 punch into my life to deal with stress on a daily basis. The other thing I am doing,  is getting a daily dose of Abraham-Hicks. I don’t want or need this blog to be all about them – but…

If it works and you feel better it is worth everything! Because how you feel matters, in more ways than you can realize. Here’s my share for the day:

What I Love – A Lesson In Expressing Appreciation

CaricatureHeadSquareToday – I just want to share with you what I love.

Well, I actually love a lot of things. I have a great family and a life full of blessings. But specifically, I caught myself (that little inner voice) saying I really love ___ and I want to express it here.

All the research we are seeing in positive psychology is pointing to the health benefits of gratitude and appreciation. You don’t just live longer, you will live a better quality of life.

When we are in the “zone,” meaning at our best we are focused, powerful, happy/content and completely squeezing the meat out of any moment. It is a good place to be – and a powerful place to create your life from.

I am learning how to retrain my brain to focus on what Abraham-Hicks calls “The Vortex.” I love listening to Abraham-Hicks. It is interesting, curious, inspiring, motivational, a little out there at times – but the biggest reason I love it is that I always feel better!

If you haven’t heard this from us before, How You Feel Matters – in so many ways. So, quick post today. Check out this Abraham-Hicks devotional video. I love it and I hope you will get something from it as well.

Learning To Turn

CaricatureHeadSquareDaily Meditation – January 10, 20-10

Here’s a little lesson I am absorbing from my morning meditation. I found this summer that when I listen to the Abraham-Hicks materials (books, recordings, dvds) I found myself feeling good – more optimistic, full of hope, and in touch with appreciation.

Then things got busy. We started building MindboomTV, doing the OneCoach program (more on that in a different post) and I got a little out of practice. But in this new year of 20-10 I am committed to a couple of new daily habits.

One of them is 2 does of Abraham-Hicks each day. Here is my first. They are easy to find. Just search “Abraham-Hicks” on YouTube. I’ve embedded on for you below. This one is particularly pertinent for me.

A lot of the discussion around the Law Of Attraction is focused on getting more of what we want. But halfway thru this session, you will hear about how it is actually our pleasure in the moment that either moves us towards or away from the blessings we have asked for.

Every moment of feeling ornery, tired, discouraged, grumpy (I resemble that remark – guilty as charged) further delays getting on the path that we would find most rewarding. I will share more of this in an upcoming segment of MindboomTV – but for now – will you join me in starting the day off with a fun message of enjoyment in your heart?

Celebrate Your Wins, But Don’t Lose Your Lessons

POSTED BY TOBIN:

So I want to share a quick blog post with everyone because sometimes our failures can be as meaningful as sharing our success.

“Celebrate your wins. But when you lose, don’t lose your lesson.”

Here was my lesson:  I was scheduled for a hypnosis fundraiser this weekend. When I checked in with the Planning Committee – ticket sales were not good. Summer schedules and everything else, this event was just not meant to be.

I was discouraged. And where I have really been going to school on the Law of Attraction lately (specifically the Abraham-Hicks materials) I was thinking, what did I do to mess this up. I thought I was pretty clear about “what I wanted.”

So after a little self-flagellation (ha!) I decided I wasn’t going to push it. Its not nearly as much fun to do shows with small groups anyways, so I went to talk with the Planners. We agreed to postpone the show and reschedule in September.

Here’s the rub – the September show is going to be a much better time than August. School will be in session so the students can get behind it. The Principal even said himself, “in a week we could sell out the theater.”

So this new date is going to work better as a fundraiser, be more fun for everyone involved, and it only came together after I stopped trying to “push the river.” And boy is that a hard lesson for me. I have really struggled lately going with the flow, especially having 5 kids home for the summer – ha!

But in hindsight, the circumstances didn’t really change (we still have a postponed show) but I feel completely different about it. Why?

Sometimes when you receive validation from a third source – you just want to say inside “see I told you this would work!”

And that it what the Law of Attraction does, it puts your MindSet in a place where you can then connect with those people and places and times when things support your bigger picture of how things can be.

Not a huge insightful lesson, just another example of how I am learning to navigate my way thru life with a better undersanding of my own internal/emotional guidance system.

NEXT TIME – can you imagine what that internal GPS might look like?

Tobin Didn’t Tell All The Story

I always find this interesting… when two people tell the same story it really is not the same story anymore.. We view things so differently and interpret them in our own way.

The Sand beach story that my husband described went down a little different from my own perspective…

We decided to take a day to ourselves and take the children (all 5 of them) to the beach. I have not been to Sand beach in couple of years. The excitement was building up the closer we got. Kids were just thrilled beyond words….

Now, I have been listening to Abraham- Hicks CD and their take on Law of attraction for past few

days….( If you are not familiar with Esther and Jerry Hicks work take a lok at this. It will change your life (www.abraham-hicks.com). It puts me in such fantastic powerful frame of mind. It is by far the most impowering material I have ever heard. Listening to it I feel like I could move a mountain !!!

So we are driving to the beach, listening to the CD, the sun is out, it is a gorgeous summer day. I can just see myself on the beach, feet in the sand, water splashing, oh, the heavenly feeling !

As we are approaching our destination we can just see the cars lined on the side of the road. If you’ve ever been to Acadia National Park, you know that the Park loop road is a one way road to the beach. You can stop along the road and go hiking on variety of trails along the way. The cars are everywhere, the place is packed..For sure ( we are thinking), we have to park far away from the beach and walk at least couple of

miles in the 90 degree heat, in the middle of the day, with 5 kids, all their water toys, sand buckets, blankets, and other 3 bags stuffed with towels, food, drinks and all that stuff you need when you are taking 7 people to the beach for the whole day.

I am feeling great! We get in the discussion about how packed the place is. My husband says to me ” We’ll

never find a place here, it is impossible! I can drop you and the kids off and I will go find a parking spot and then just walk to the beach and find you there.” I turned to him and said “What kind of a talk is this? We are listening to how to manifest anything you want and you are saying such terrible negative things, hush,

hush – of course we’ll find a spot. Prime spot.” I opened the window moving my hands in the air saying ” hush, hush get away you negative energy, out the window”. Kids thought I was pretty funny doing my “witch thing.”

We proceed to the parking area. It was closed. Full. We ignored the sign and drove right passed it… Sure enough as we are getting closer to the beach a blue car backs up and a prime spot opens right in front of us.

It was a great day at the beach!
